A New Integrated Concept for TG-MS with Outstanding Features

Mass spectrometer in combination with thermal analysis has been used for many years as a very important and helpful analytical tool. Most of the time, a standard mass spectrometer has been connected to the thermobalance for the evolved gas analysis. In the last decade, Netzsch has done an excellent, very often pioneer work to establish this method with different types of coupling and new analytical techniques.
In the last years, InProcess Instruments developed many industrial applications for process mass spectrometry used in steel plants, chemical plants, glass furnaces, but also applications in soil and plant science.
The combination of the knowledge of Netzsch and the long term experience how such an instrument should look like and the analytical and technical knowledge of IPI results in the development of the new instrument "Netzsch Aeolos" with outstanding features for TG-MS application.
The Aeolos is based on a quadrupole mass spectrometer with a quartz capillary coupling. For the first time, a temperature range of 300°C is available, the capillary and the gas inlet part can be heated independently and both cover this high temperature. The standard mass range of the spectrometer is 1-300. The user-friendly design includes
  • adapter for fast exchange of the quartz capillary inlet system
  • easy access to all mechanical and electrical components
  • interlocks and auto-diagnostic for safe use
The new software gives easy access to the different measurement modes with user-friendly menus. The type of Netzsch -Thermobalance and also the type of thermocouple used in the STA is detected automatically. Many fast measurement modes as well as special diagnostic features to verify the correct working of the mass spectrometer are available - an important tool, which can also be used by less experienced users. The way of data collection follows GLP and every result can be traced back to the row data. The software is adapted for Netzsch, so start and end of the measurement are controlled by TG-software and the data are displayed together with TG-data. TG-MS can be done in parallel with TG-FTIR, controlled by one computer.
Detailed examples will be given for
  • Trace analysis with the new Aeolos, especially for difficult components
  • Dynamic of the system and full automatic adaptation of measurement ranges
  • New features for the qualitative analysis
  • The way from qualitative to quantitative analysis with TGA-MS
