A variety of sulfate and nitrate containing phases is important as low temperature minerals, as transport agents for pollutants, and as industrial byproducts. Their thermochemistry is difficult to study because they often combine both refractory and volatile consitituents. We have developed high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetric methods for these materials and have combined such calorimetry with TGA/DTA/DSC/EGA using Netzsch instrumentation . Case studies of binary alkaline earth sulfates, jarosites, hydrotalcites, and cancrinite and sodalite zeolite-related materials will be discussed.
